Because of the discussion we are having in another topic about Australian white wines, and I like white wines, I would like to ask you what are the best white wines in your opinion. I understand it is hard to tell what is the best white wine because this may depend on many factors, however it would be interesting to know your preferences about this subject.
In my opinion German Riesling is very good in particular auslese styles, then I would add Australian Semillon which I recently discovered, and then Chablis.

This is a pretty hard question to answer. In my opinion every wine should be considered according to the particular moment it is being tasted, according to the food you are pairing the wine with.
People asked me this question thousand times and every time my answer is always the same: it depends on what we are going to have this wine with. I like to consider wine a companion of good moments and food, therefore we should consider these factors as well in order to tell what is the best wine.
Maybe we should ask a question like this: what is the best wine in such occasion?

Although this is a pretty hard question to answer, I agree with antonello when he says it also depends on the occasion.
If we are talking about the best wine according to a very personal taste, I would say Champagne, Chablis and Bourgogne Pinot Noir.

My personal preferences for white wines are pretty "normal" and I like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc made in the Californian style. I consider Napa to be the best area for white wines in California.

This is a pretty hard question to answer! I think the best wine is the one which makes perfect a particular occasion. However I like Chablis and white Burgundians, I believe they are simply wonderful. Not to mention Sauvignon Blanc from Loire! Great!

It is always hard to answer such questions! I like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, although I must admit I once tried some Italian white wines which I liked very much. (I do not remember their name, though).
My favourite white wine area is Napa Valley and the Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs they make there are sometimes stellar!

Jorg, I tend to agree with Anton's comments about which is the best white wines. This is a subjective question. I look at this question in 2 ways. First, it's the wines of personal favourites. For me, it is Chardonnays (not over-oaked) like Chablis, Semillon, Gerwurztraminer and Riesling ( I also like others at different occasions). I also like white Champagne.

Second, it's the varieties that grow very well in different regions. So, it's like Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand, Gerwurztraminer from Alsace, Chenin Blanc from Loire or Semillon from Hunter Valley.

So, certain wines can be "best" in certain occasions or events.
