Santa Sofia: Amarone and Recioto, the great wines of Valpolicella
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, February 21st, 2013
The history of Santa Sofia is strongly associated to Valpolicella and its great wines, a primary figure for the renowned Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella. The event dedicated to the winery of Pedemonte di Valpolicella, in province of Verona, had as protagonist the wine making vision of Giancarlo Begnoni - owner and wine maker of Santa Sofia - giving, in particular to Amarone, an expression of elegance while keeping the typical structure of these wines. To the event took part Ms. Stefania Romellini - communication manager of Santa Sofia - who illustrated to the participants the two hundred years of the Veronese winery history, the style and wine making vision of Begnoni family, as well as the qualities of the territory, Valpolicella wines and its grapes. The evening started with the bubbles of Santa Sofia Brut, an interesting sparkling wine made from Garganega, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc grapes, produced with the long Charmat method. The event continues with a pleasing preview tasting reserved to this event, Lugana 2012, interesting expression of Trebbiano di Lugana and which will be commercialized in the next months. The glasses get an evident red color and are the famous red berried grapes of Valpolicella to become protagonists of the evening, starting from Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2010, made from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara grapes, produced with the traditional "ripasso" method, in which Valpolicella wine benefits from the richness of Amarone pomace, giving a fuller body and aromatic strength. Protagonist of the evening has undoubtedly been Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2007, a rich and powerful wine, in which is also expressed a pleasing elegance and a good balance: a wine capable of conquering the favor of the over 160 participants of the event, successful in telling, in a glass, the style of Begnoni family. Wide appreciation also for Recioto della Valpolicella Classico 2009, richer and more concentrated than Amarone, however characterized by an impeccable elegance and agreeability. The sensorial tasting of the wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana - DiWineTaste chief editor - who also created the dishes for the pairing with the wines of the evening.
