Giacomo Fenocchio: the magnificence of Barolo Cannubi, Villero and Bussia
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, May 23rd, 2013
Giacomo Fenocchio winery is among the few of Langa to have accompanied Barolo wine during the course of its history up to nowadays. Founded in 1864, when Barolo wine started its new course, since five generations the Fenocchio family makes the noble wine of Langa by observing the tradition of these places, by allowing its wines to age in large wood casks and without using any selected yeast. To the event took part Mr. Claudio Fenocchio - owner and wine maker of this winery - who accounted the amazing territory of Barolo and the specific characteristics of each cru. Giacomo Fenocchio winery in fact produces Barolo from the vineyards of three prestigious Barolo crus: Cannubi in the municipality of Barolo, Villero in Castiglione Falletto and Bussia in Monforte d'Alba, all being protagonists of this event. The magnificent tasting of the Giacomo Fenocchio's Barolo wines has been preceded by two wines produced by the winery of Monforte d'Alba: Barbera d'Alba Superiore 2010 and Langhe Nebbiolo 2011. Wines produced according to the winery style, aged in large cask and fermented by using indigenous yeast only. The tasting of the three Barolo crus has been an extraordinary chance to understand the differences and qualities of each area, by directly comparing the three glasses in order to immediately understand the organoleptic differences. The first wine to be tasted has been Barolo Cannubi 2008, expressing the quality of the territory in the municipality of Barolo, with its finesse and elegance, although having an evident structure and power. It is then the turn of Barolo Villero 2008, therefore entering the territory of Castiglione Falletto, with a soil richer in clay, expressing a fuller structure and aromas becoming more complex and rich. Finally, it is the turn of Barolo Bussia 2008, in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba - awarded with DiWineTaste Five Diamonds - in which both the structure and the richness of aromas are even more complex. The event also offered the chance to understand the differences of the three Nebbiolo clones - Michet, Lampia and Rosť - all being used by Giacomo Fenocchio winery in its Barolo wines. The wines of the event have been paired with dishes expressly created by Antonello Biancalana for each wine and prepared - as usual - by Locanda del Golosi kitchen led by Chef Emiliano Buccolini.
