Col d'Orcia: the great excellence of Tuscany with Rosso, Moscadello and Brunello di Montalcino
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, February 22nd, 2018
Col d'Orcia - the winery protagonist of this event - is one of the most significant ones of Montalcino, among the most important wineries of Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino. An evening dedicated to the discovery of Col d'Orcia's productive and enological phylosophy in which took part dr. Gianmichele Grieco - agronomist and sales manager of the winery of Italy - whose illustrated to participants the peculiarities of the vineyards and wines that, since 2013, are made with organic viticulture. An enological and sensorial journey started with Spezieri 2016, made with Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo grapes, and immediate and direct wine, aged in steel tanks and in which can be perceived the typical crispness and fruit intensity of both varieties. The event continues with the first of the four wines strongly representing the famous Tuscan territory, starting from Rosso di Montalcino 2015, of course produced with 100% Sangiovese, a wine of remarkable agreeableness, well balanced between the aging in cask, roundness and the Sangiovese's crispness. It is then the turn of Brunello di Montalcino 2013 in which power is joined to elegance, typical in wines of this land, which is well perceptible, also thanks to the particular soil composition where vineyards are cultivated in and giving a remarkable elegance. Evidently different the profile of Brunello di Montalcino Nastagio 2012, capable of expressing richer and more complex aromas - however perfectly recalling the Sangiovese grape cultivated in Montalcino area - as well as a fuller body and structure. Black cherry, plum, raspberry, blackberry and blueberry are elegantly fused to dried violet and the olfactory sensation given by the aging in large cask, enriched by a pleasing balsamic hint directly recalling menthol. The event dedicated to Col d'Orcia ended with the wine that - undoubtedly - represent the wine making history of Montalcino and produced with Muscat Blanc, the famous aromatic grape, found in this territory since Renaissance times. Moscadello di Montalcino Pascena Vendemmia Tardiva (Late Harvesting) 2012 - in part aged in barrique - gives the senses a profile of extreme finesse, with aromas recalling the typical aromatic profile of Muscat Blanc, as well as a sweetness perfectly balanced by acidity. The tasting of wines has been conducted as usual by Antonello Biancalana - DiWineTaste chief editor - who has also created the dishes paired to the wines and made by Locanda dei Golosi's kitchen led by Chef Emiliano Buccolini.
