Il Conventino di Monteciccardo: discovering the rare Famoso, Incrocio Bruni, Bianchello, Lacrima, Aleatico e the great Sangiovese
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, December 6th, 2018
The first part of the eighteenth season of DiWineTaste events ended with the discovery of some of the indigenous grapes of Marche, in particular those in the province of Pesaro-Urbino. Protagonist of the evening has been il Conventino di Monteciccardo winery which, for the occasion, has introduced six wines all being produced with the typical grapes of its territory: Famoso, Incrocio Bruni 54, Biancame, Lacrima, Aleatico and Sangiovese. To the event took part Mr. Mattia Marcantoni - owner and vintner of il Conventino di Monteciccardo - whose focused on how the single grapes and single soils contribute to the definition of the style of the winery which, since 2003, is committed to the revaluation of local varieties in this territory. The evening started with Il Famoso del Convento 2017, a perfect start to the wine making style of this winery as well as to the potentials of Famoso grape, capable of pleasing crispness and elegance. It is then the turn of Corniale 2016, made with Incrocio Bruni 54 grape and, just like the previous one, vinified in stainless steel tanks, capable of expressing the character of this variety conceived by prof. Bruno Bruni in the 1930s, by crossing Verdicchio and Sauvignon Blanc. The confirmation of the remarkable quality of white wines made by il Conventino di Monteciccardo is undoubtedly offered by Bianchello del Metauro Superiore Brecce di Tufo 2016, historical DOC of Marche region and which the next year will celebrate the fiftieth year of its foundation, produced with Biancame grape - locally known as "Bianchello" - and aged in cask, for a convincing result both of agreeableness and character. It is then the turn of the first of the red wines of this event, also in this case marked by the typical varieties of Marche. Cardoviola 2017 is in fact made from the union of Lacrima and Aleatico grapes, in equal parts, giving to the glass the expressive identity of the single grapes, a triumph of flowers and fruits well supported by a good crispness making the wine both direct and agreeable. The fifth wine of the evening has as a protagonist one of the most famous red berried grapes of Italy and with which is produced Colli Pesaresi Sangiovese Riserva Cardomagno 2014, a full bodied wine, aged in barrique and cask, which after four years can be appreciated both for its remarkable sensorial quality and the for typical and pleasing acidity of Sangiovese. The event dedicated to il Conventino di Monteciccardo ended with Passum 2011 in which we meet again Aleatico and Lacrima joined by Merlot, all dried and the vinified in barrique. A sweet wine, however not so sweet, getting its proper balance both from the gentle crispness and the round astringency, however having a structure capable of allowing difficult pairing at the table, such as chocolate. The sensorial tasting of wines of il Conventino di Monteciccardo has been conducted, as usual, by Antonello Biancalana, DiWineTaste chief editor.
