Arnaldo Caprai's Sagrantino di Montefalco
Milan, Italy
Sunday, November 11th, 2012
Inaugurated with success DiWineTaste Five Diamonds seminars. In this first seminar, special guest of the event, the magnificent Sagrantino di Montefalco of Arnaldo Caprai winery, which in many occasions has been capable of conquering the highest score from our tasting committee. To explain the territory of Montefalco and Sagrantino grape, dr. Mattia dell'Orto, head of research programs at Arnaldo Caprai winery. The seminar had as protagonists, not only two Sagrantino wines, but also the other prestigious red produced in this territory: Rosso di Montefalco. Mattia dell'Orto led participants to the discovery of the great grape of Montefalco, emphasizing its unique and historical qualities, including the main characteristic of Sagrantino and its remarkably high content in polyphenols, and how they affect viticultural, enological and sensorial aspects. The seminar also covered the history of the winery, as well as the main phases which allowed Arnaldo and Marco Caprai to reach the highest and most wanted goals worldwide. This success, obtained not only by a brilliant viticultural and business foresight, but also thanks to the plural-decennial collaboration with the Department of Vegetal Production of University of Milan and the job done by the team led by prof. Leonardo Valenti. The wines studied in the seminar have been Montefalco Rosso Riserva 2007 - made from Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot grapes - Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano 2008 and Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni 2007. The two Sagrantino wines, tasted with the comparative technique, allowed participants to understand the main characteristics of the great red of Montefalco, while focusing on how the distance of just one kilometer from the vineyards - and the different environmental, micro climate and enological conditions - can bring to the production of two different wines, despite they are produced with the very same grape. The tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana, who has also introduced participants to the fundamental techniques of sensorial tasting and their practical application on Sagrantino.
