Tenuta San Leonardo, absolute excellence of Italy
Milan, Italy
Tuesday, March 12th, 2013
A memorable seminar, an extraordinary chance to understand one of the highest expression of Italian wine, emblem of an elegance celebrated everywhere in the world. The seminar dedicated to Tenuta San Leonardo wines - renowned winery of Borghetto dell'Adige, in province of Trento - has in fact represented an exclusive moment in which has been possible to understand the viticultural potentials of the territory, as well as a chance of the preview tasting of Vette di San Leonardo 2012, ended with a magnificent and exclusive vertical tasting of San Leonardo vintages 2006, 2001 and 1996. To talk about the prestige and history of Tenuta San Leonardo has been Marquis Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga - son of Marquis Carlo, one of the indisputable fathers of the modern Italian wine vision - accompanied by his sister Marchioness Ilaria Guerrieri Gonzaga. The seminar had as protagonists seven wines of Tenuta San Leonardo, divided in two distinct moments of tasting. The first part has been dedicated to the sensorial tasting of wines and to their expression in an enogastronomical context, paired with dishes invented by Antonello Biancalana and realized by Chef Fabrizio Sansoni, with the help of Viola Enoteca kitchen and room staff. Vette di San Leonardo 2012 - a preview tasting reserved to this seminar - unfold in the glass the crispness and elegance of Sauvignon Blanc interpreted by Tenuta San Leonardo style: a wine of remarkable elegance, in which are magnificently found the main qualities of the famous white grape: crispness, elegance of aromas and pleasing minerality. Second wine of the seminar has been Terre di San Leonardo 2009 - made from Merlot and Cebernet Sauvignon grapes - a red wine with a pleasing character, certainly less powerful than the other wines of the Tenuta, however having the expression of wine making philosophy of Guerrieri Gonzaga family. The third wine tasted in the course of the seminar has been Villa Gresti vintages 2006 and 2001: two extraordinary wines, with an impeccable elegance, sons of two excellent vintages and which will certainly be capable of giving wonderful emotions in the years to come. Mainly produced with Merlot grape and a small part of Carménère, Villa Gresti expresses a character of extraordinary elegance, giving a wine not only of remarkable class, but also proving how Merlot can give wine of magnificent balance: a rare quality going beyond its fame of grape with a round and smooth character. The seminar reached it highest and noble moment when the room has been set up for the prestigious vertical tasting of one of the greatest and most celebrated wines of Italy, pride of Italian oenology in the world: San Leonardo. Three extraordinary vintages have in fact colored the glasses of noble red, telling the story of the magnificence of this wine in the course of ten years, from 2006, passing through 2001, down to 1996. San Leonardo confirms its excellent qualities, a wine that, after 17 years, is capable of expressing a personality and a sensorial profile of absolute value. What impresses more about San Leonardo is its strong identity which strongly binds this wine to the territory where it was born and the productive philosophy of Tenuta San Leonardo. This famous wine - created by Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga and his notable competence in viticulture and wine making - had its first vintage in 1982 inspired by the great French wines from Bordeaux and the prestigious experience gained by Marquis Carlo in the 1970s, in a period which can certainly be considered what we can define as "the renaissance of Italian oenology". A period of remarkable importance in which the wines of Italy begins a new journey based on quality and the understanding of territory, an extraordinary story in which Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga still represents one of the main protagonists. His San Leonardo - emblem of wine excellence - shows an impeccable expression of a style reaffirmed every year, a prove of the full expression and respect of a territory and its grapes, a magic repeating at every vintage. This in fact has been the common characteristic of the three San Leonardo tasted in the course of the seminar, each of them characterized by the quality of each vintage, however expression of a common style, while respecting the territory. The glass has also revealed the magnificent potentials of San Leonardo to stand long times of aging in bottle, giving wines capable of showing - even after 17 years - a youth and crispness in clear evidence, something which will be confirmed, there is no doubt about this, in a long time ahead. And the wish, of course, is to be still there in order to enjoy the beauty and the elegance of San Leonardo which, since ever, is capable to express with a majestic and regal nobility.
