Gatta: Franciacorta, Curtefranca and Cellatica
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, March 19th, 2009
A pleasing journey around the wines of the province of Brescia. Mario Gatta's wines have in fact allowed the appreciation of the noble and prestigious Franciacorta bubbles, Terre di Franciacorta and the historical area of Cellatica. After seven years, DiWineTaste readers had a new opportunity to taste the production of Agricola Gatta - located in the eastern area of Franciacorta, at Gussago - appreciating the new products this winery from Franciacorta has created in the past years. It was in fact a return - after seven years - with a new event dedicated to Mario Gatta's wines, who participated to the evening together with his wife Donatella. The evening has begun with Franciacorta Brut non vintage, produced with Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, refermented and aged in bottle for 30 months. The event continued with two Franciacortas vintage, Franciacorta Satèn 2003 - from 100% Chardonnay grape and refermented in bottle for 48 months - and the excellent Franciacorta Extra Brut Molenèr 2000, produced with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, refermented in bottle for 60 months, certainly among the best bubbles currently produced by Mario Gatta and which caught the interest and appreciation of the participants to this event. The evening continued with Terre di Franciacorta Bianco Febo 2005, from 100% Chardonnay and aged for 16 months in barrique, then ending with the excellent Cellatica Superiore Negus 2001, made from Barbera, Marzemino, Incrocio Terzi and Schiava Gentile grapes - aged for 24 months in barrique and for 2 years in bottle: a red with a character and with a high personality. All the wines have been presented in enogastronomical matching with the dishes created for the occasion by Antonello Biancalana who also conducted the sensorial tasting of Agricola Gatta's wines.
