Luigi Maffini: the King of Cilento's Fiano and Aglianico
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, November 13th, 2014
An evening dedicated to the magnificence of Luigi Maffini wines and his personal viticultural and enological philosophy, completely focused on the typical varieties of Cilento area: Fiano and Aglianico. From rose Denazzano, including whites Kratos and Pietraincatenata, to reds Kleos and Cenito, every wines has been a unique and extraordinary occasion to understand both the potentials of Cilento as well as the greatness of Fiano and Aglianico. In the authoritative and pleasing company of Luigi Maffini, who talked about his wine making vision and how Fiano and Aglianico should be interpreted in his view, every glass has been the proof of the quality expressed by the winery of Castellabate. The event started with Denazzano 2013 - a rose produced with 100% Aglianico - which allowed the understanding, since the very first sip, this style of wine has the potential of high qualitative expression when produced with quality methods. Crisp and immediate, Denazzano expresses agreeableness and elegance, a wine inviting sip after sip. The event then proceeds with Kratos 2013 - among the flagship wines produced by Luigi Maffini and his wife Raffaella Gallo - in which Fiano expresses extraordinary levels of finesse and elegance, certainly among the best examples made in Campania with this grape. Elegance and class is also found in the interpretation of Cilento Fiano Pietraincatenata 2012, wine of remarkable potential of aging in bottle, it differs from Kratos for its fuller body, power and complexity: a wine easily conquering DiWineTaste five diamonds. It is then the turn of the two reds of the evening, both produced with Aglianico grape. The first one is Kleos 2012, a wine that in its immediate crispness however keeps the potentials of this great red grape, by joining a good body and elegance to a balanced astringency. Wine of more robust body and power, it is then the turn of Cilento Aglianico Cenito 2010 that - despite its four years of life - shows a lively crispness while promising a magnificent future in bottle. Wine of character and body, Cilento Aglianico Cenito 2010 expresses the typical crispness and power of Aglianico as well as the renowned elegance Luigi Maffini is capable of giving to all of his wines.
