Citille di Sopra: the magic of Rosso, Brunello di Montalcino and Sangiovese
Perugia, Italy
Friday, November 15th, 2019
An amazing evening dedicated to one of the greatest Italian red grapes and one of the most famous and celebrated Italian wine areas: Sangiovese and Montalcino. To tell this magnificent grape and this extraordinary territory of Tuscany, the wines of the Citille di Sopra winery - in Torrenieri, a few kilometers from Montalcino - a magnificent and amazing story which has also allowed the understanding of Brunello di Montalcino in a special interpretation : distilled in elegant grappa. To the event too part Fabio Innocenti - owner of Citille di Sopra - who, together with his wife Katia, illustrated the viticultural and geological characteristics of the different areas of Montalcino, the role of the territory and the peculiarities of Sangiovese in the different interpretations of his wines. The event also allowed the understanding of how the same variety - Sangiovese - is capable of producing wines with a style and profoundly different character within the same territory and in function of the different viticultural and enological factors. The evening started with Rosso di Montalcino 2016, a wine differing from Brunello both for its productive characteristics and for the production disciplinary, which magnificently introduced the participants to Citille di Sopra's enological style - made of perfect sensorial cleanliness and personalities of their wines - as well as the potential of Sangiovese cultivated in clay soils and therefore giving wines of greater depth in colors and a decidedly fuller structure. The event continued with the first of the three Brunello of Montalcino wines of Citille di Sopra - White Label 2014 vintage - produced with Sangiovese from the estate's vineyards and aged in large casks, giving the senses elegance and power, perfectly balanced between astringency, crispness and roundness. It is the the turn of Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Poggio Ronconi 2014, aged in large cask and extraordinary interpretation of this "non easy" vintage, surprising for its power and sensorial complexity, with clean aromas recalling the typical sensations of Sangiovese, a powerful and full structure, impeccable balance and a sumptuous taste-olfactory persistence. The third Brunello di Montalcino of the evening has been the Riserva 2012, the only one of the three to be aged in cask and barrique, the result of a careful selection of the best grapes of the estate, giving the senses a richer and more complex interpretation, in which are clearly emerging the tertiary evolution of time, however expressing the intact personality of Sangiovese made of flowers and fruits. The event ended with Grappa di Brunello di Montalcino 2015, a distillate of pleasant roundness and balanced sweetness, which gave participants the opportunity to understand this special interpretation of Sangiovese di Montalcino. The wine tasting was conducted - as usual - by Antonello Biancalana, DiWineTaste chief editor, who has also took care of the creation of the dishes paired with the wines of Citille di Sopra and made by the kitchen of Locanda dei Golosi led by Chef Emiliano Buccolini.
