Tenuta Le Velette: Etruscan wines from the territory of Orvieto
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, June 20th, 2013
Orvieto is a wine land having a very long history, among the oldest in Italy. A history setting its roots at the times of Etruscans who left in this area remarkable signs of their art and glorious civilization. Tenuta Le Velette is among the main wineries of this territory, as well as being part of the history of Orvieto wines, committed to the production of wine since the half of the 1800s. An evening dedicated to the wines of Orvieto and to which took part Dr. Corrado Bottai, co-owner of the winery belonging to his family since six generations, who accounted the history of Orvieto wines and the specific characteristics of the six wines tasted during the course of the event. The first two wines, Orvieto Classico Berganorio 2012 and Orvieto Classico Superiore Lunato 2012, had the role of expressing the potentials of the territory through traditional grapes which have been historically used for the production of white wines of Orvieto: Procanico, Grechetto, Malvasia Bianca, Verdello and Drupeggio. Wines giving to the glass two distinct interpretations of the territory, in particular their productive and qualitative potentials, expressed by the comparison of young vines and old vines. The third wine of the evening has been Sole Uve 2011, produced with 100% Grechetto, a white of good body and complexity, with an interesting development in the glass and rich of aromas which can be easily associated to varietal qualities. It is then the turn of the two red wines of Tenuta Le Velette, beginning with Rosso Orvietano Rosso di Spicca 2011, a wine made from Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero grapes, with an immediate and direct character, a red calling to conviviality, while keeping the ancient tradition of red wines in the land of Orvieto. The event continued with Calanco 2008, a wine produced with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a more robust character, a very good balance between Sangiovese's crispness and Cabernet Sauvignon's power, to which time has given a pleasing roundness. The event ended with Il Raggio 2010, a sweet wine made from dried Muscat Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Grechetto grapes, with a good complexity of aromas and a pleasing sweetness well balanced by a good crispness. The sensorial tasting of wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana who also created the recipes paired to the wines of Tenuta Le Velette and prepared by Locanda dei Golosi kitchen's staff.
