The first part of DiWineTaste events, corresponding to the last month of each year, ended with the great wines of Castello Poggiarello, an interesting winery of Sovicille in province of Siena, Tuscany. In a very evocative view in which is found a castle built in the 1100s, in a land committed to viticulture since many centuries, wine making tradition is still alive by offering a special interpretation of the territory and completely expressed by French varieties. Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot are in fact the grapes cultivated in Castello Poggiarello's vineyards and with which are made wines of remarkable class and elegance. The narration of wines made by the winery of Sovicille had been done by lawyer Luigi Fineschi Pianigiani - owner of Castello Poggiarello -
whom, besides telling about the characteristics of his land, has particularly focused on the productive philosophy of his wines. The evening started with Nereo 2012, produced with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot, a direct and immediate wine however offering a clear vision of the productive style of Castello Poggiarello, a wine of remarkable versatility expressing a pleasing class and elegance. It is then the turn of Montebruno 2012 - made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in barrique - expressing the typical power of the famous Bordelais grape, a wine joining power to class, with agreeable and round tannins, giving a wine of superb elegance. The following wines allowed participants to enjoy a short vertical tasting, by comparing Collerosso vintages 2011 and 2012, a wine produced with Cabernet Franc and Merlot in equal parts, aged in barrique. A wine of excellent class offering to the senses of participants the distinctive character of the two vintages and how time can change, even significantly, the personality of a wine. 2011 seemed to have reached a good complexity, in which the characters of the respective grapes are clearly perceivable, whereas in 2012 is still perceived the wild character of Cabernet Franc although rounded by Merlot. The evening ended with Montechiaro 2009, produced with 100% Cabernet Franc and aged in barrique, expressing - after six years of aging - remarkable elegance and class, as well as confirming the high viticultural and wine making quality expressed by Castello Poggiarello and having in this wine one of its best expressions. The event has been conducted, as usual, by Antonello Biancalana who also took care of the creation of dishes paired to the wines as well as leading the sensorial tasting of wines.
