Verdicchio is one the enological glories of Marches, Gioacchino Garofoli winery - historical winery of Loreto, in province of Ancona, established in 1901 - is among the greatest protagonists of this important white berried grape. The account of Verdicchio and the wines has been told by dr. Carlo Garofoli, production manager and wine maker of the winery, among the most important figures of the rebirth of Verdicchio, taking it to the maximum expression with his wines, in particular Podium and Serra Fiorese. The event represented an extraordinary occasion for understanding Verdicchio - defined by many as "a red berried grape dressed in white" - in different wine making expressions. The event started with Brut Riserva Metodo Classico 2006, produced with 100% Verdicchio and refermented in bottle for 48 months, a sparkling wine with a strong personality supported by a pleasing roundness and complexity. The discovery of Verdicchio continued with one of the most renowned wines of Garofoli winery - Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Podium 2008 - among the highest expressions of this grape, completely fermented and aged in steel tanks. The extraordinary longevity of the white of Marches hes been surprisingly proven by the third wine of the evening, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva Serra Fiorese 2006, a five year old wine, still rich and young, which structure is accentuated by the fermentation and aging in barrique for 11 months. The event is then continued with the only red of the evening - Rosso Conero Riserva Grosso Agontano 2007 - produced with 100% Montepulciano grape and aged for about 18 months in barrique - a great red wine, an example of the remarkable possibilities of Montepulciano grape. The evening ended with a sweet wine, Dorato 2008, produced with Muscat Blanc and Golden Muscat grapes, of pleasing elegance and crispness. The wines of Garofoli winery have been tasted in enogastronomical pairing with dishes expressly created by Antonello Biancalana for each wine.
