Vignavecchia: Sangiovese, Chianti Classico and Vin Santo
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, September 18th, 2014
The season 2014/2015 of DiWineTaste events starts with one of the historical wineries of Chianti Classico, famous wine area of Tuscany, located between Siena and Florence. Fattoria Vignavecchia, established in 1876 by Odorardo Breccari - illustrious Italian naturalist and botanist - is one of the founding members of Chianti Classico Consortium, is committed, since the times of its foundation, to the production of this historical wine of Tuscany. With a viticultural and wine production mainly focused on Sangiovese, Fattoria Vignavecchia is also committed to the territorial expression of this important Italian variety as well as other typical wines of the area, including the excellent Vin Santo del Chianti Classico. To the event took part Orsola Beccari - owner of the winery with his sister Brigida - and wine maker dr. Jessica Rovai, who have accounted the peculiarities and characteristics of their wines and territory. Event focused on Sangiovese, with the exception of Vin Santo, it starts with Tulipa 2013, a rose wine made by maceration, expressing the immediate crispness of Sangiovese with the result of having an agreeable and pleasing wine. It is then the turn of the first Chianti Classico wines of the evening, vintage 2011, in which Sangiovese joins the roundness of Merlot which however leaves the main variety of this wine the chance to express its elegant character, result to which is also added the over 500 meters of altitude where is found Radda in Chianti. The event proceeds with Chianti Classico Riserva Odoardo Beccari 2010 - flagship wine of Vignavecchia and named after its founder - made from Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero, shows a fuller character yet keeping the typical elegance of Sangiovese. Third and last red wine of the evening was Raddese 2009, a wine dedicated to the territory of Fattoria Vignavecchia, produced with Sangiovese only and aged in barrique, expresses an even fuller body, in which time smooths the exuberance of the famous red variety, while making a wine with an excellent balance. The event ended with Vin Santo del Chianti Classico 2006, produced with Malvasia Bianca only and aged in traditional "caratelli" barrels, an interesting wine with a complex profile however having a charming elegance. The tasting of wines and the creation of dishes paired to Fattoria Vignavecchia wines has been done by Antonello Biancalana, DiWineTaste chief editor.
