Decugnano dei Barbi: the great wines of Orvieto and Pourriture Noble
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, September 22nd, 2011
The new season 2011/2012 of DiWineTaste events started with the prestige and quality of Umbria - the green heart of Italy - with the wines of one of the most renowned and historical wine areas of the region: Orvieto. Renowned since the times of ancient Etruscans, Orvieto has always been appreciated for its white wines. This long history and tradition is still alive in the quality of Decugnano dei Barbi's wines, among the wineries which contributed to the prestige of Orvieto, also contributing to the wine making development of the area: it is right in this winery in 1981, thanks to the extraordinary intuition of dr. Claudio Barbi, was created the famous Pourriture Noble, therefore revealing the high vocation of Orvieto for the production of the so called "botrytized" wines, one of the few areas in Italy. To the event took part dr. Claudio Barbi - who established Decugnano dei Barbi in 1973 - and his son dr. Enzo Barbi, manager of the famous winery of Orvieto. The event started with the tasting of Decugnano Brut Metodo Classico 2005, among the first classic method sparkling wines of Umbria, in which Chardonnay meets the tradition of Orvieto with Verdello and Procanico grapes, refermented in bottle for at least 4 years. The event continued with the last born wine in Decugnano dei Barbi - Maris 2009 - produced with 100% Chardonnay and in which can be fully appreciated the style of the Barbi family, strongly oriented to elegance and minerality, a characteristic common to all Decugnano dei Barbi's wines. It is the the turn of Orvieto Classico Superiore Il Bianco 2009, flagship wine of the winery and which strongly marked the history of modern wine making of Orvieto, an impeccable wine for elegance and crispness, among the most appreciated wines by the participants to the event. Deep appreciation was also shown for the other flagship wine of the winery of Orvieto - Il Rosso di Decugnano 2008 - produced with Sangiovese, Montepulciano e Syrah grapes, aged in barrique for 12 months. The end of the event has been crowned with the famous Pourriture Noble 2009, elegant and extraordinary wine produced with Grechetto and Sauvignon Blanc embellished by noble rot, a wine created by the intuition of dr. Claudio Barbi, and which consecrated Orvieto among the few area of the world with the vocation to the production of wines made from grapes affected by Botrytis Cinerea. The tasting of the wines has been conducted - as usual - by Antonello Biancalana who also created the dishes paired to the five wines of Decugnano dei Barbi.
