A beautiful journey discovering wines of Sicily and passing by five different wine areas of the island: Menfi, Noto, Vittoria, Etna and Milazzo. To conduct this interesting journey have been Planeta's wines of Menfi, a prestigious Sicilian winery that in the course of the last twenty years has been capable of writing memorable pages of wine making in this island. The narration of the five areas and wines originating from these lands has been done by Sergio Ardito - sales manager of Planeta winery - by focusing on the respective viticultural and enological differences, as well as the characteristics of the indigenous grapes cultivated in the estate's vineyards. The event started with Noto Moscato Bianco 2015, an elegant and pleasing wine, dry and crisp, giving an evidently new and uncommon interpretation of Muscat Blanc in Sicily. It is then the turn of Menfi area represented by Sicilia Bianco Alastro 2015 - produced with Grecanico, Grillo and Sauvignon Blanc - capable of perfectly joining the soul of Sicilian wines to fresh and pleasing aromas, in a perfect and well expressed balance. The journey continues to the interesting territory of Etna volcano with Etna Rosso 2015, a red made with 100% Nerello Mascalese grape, giving to the glass a wine of remarkable elegance joined to a pleasing crispness in which can be perceived - clean and evident - the typical personality of wines made in this territory. The journey continues to the province of Ragusa with Cerasuolo di Vittoria 2014 - produced with Nero d'Avola and Frappato grapes - confirming the remarkable cleanness to the nose typical in wines of Planeta winery. In the mouth can be perceived a perfect and harmonic contrast between Nero d'Avola and Frappato, giving to the senses a pleasing elegance with a right body. The next stop had as protagonist a wine made in the Planeta estates of Capo Milazzo, in province of Messina, Sicilia Nero d'Avola - Nocera 2014, a wine which will let the winery of Menfi to be part of Mamertino DOC, the historical and famous wine praised by Pliny the Elder. Fruit of Nero d'Avola and Nocera - a typical variety of the province of Messina - this wine perfectly expresses the characteristics of the respective grapes associated to structure and roundness given by the aging in barrique. The journey in Sicily ends in the place from where it started, with Passito di Noto 2014 - in this occasion served from prestigious magnum bottles - produced with dried Muscat Blanc, giving a gentle sweetness perfectly balanced by a lively acidity, with a fresh and pleasing interpretation of remarkable elegance and finesse. The sensorial tasting of wines and the historical narration of grapes protagonists in Planeta wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana - DiWineTaste chief editor - who has also created, as usual, the dishes paired to the wines of this event.
