Manzone Giovanni: the power of Monforte d'Alba Barolo and Langhe
Perugia, Italy
Thursday, April 21st, 2016
An iron fist in a velvet glove. The power and magnificence of Manzone's Barolo, produced in the most prestigious crus of Monforte d'Alba, can be described with this well known saying. Not only Barolo, of course, as the protagonists of this event have also been the typical wines of Langhe and Alba, including the rare and prestigious Rossese Bianco, reevaluated by Giovanni Manzone winery. The story and wines of the evening has been accounted by Mauro Manzone - son of Giovanni Manzone and wine maker of the family winery - by focusing on the characteristics and differences of the vineyards owned by his family, in particular the Barolo crus Gramolere, Castelletto and Bricat. The event opened with Langhe Rossese Bianco Rosserto 2014, an excellent white with class and elegance joined to the structure of a red wine, produced with Rossese Bianco, the rare white grape reevaluated by Manzone winery. The event continued with the first of the five red wines of the evening - Dolcetto d'Alba Le Ciliegie 2014 - having a remarkable cleanness and agreeableness, a well made interpretation of this Piedmontese red grape which benefits from the structure given by the territory of Monforte d'Alba. Also interesting Barbera d'Alba Le Ciliegie 2013, part vinified in cask and in steel tanks, brilliantly joins the typical direct character of Barbera ans the complex touch of wood, for an agreeable wine with interesting enogastornomical versatility. It is then the turn of Langhe Nebbiolo Il Crutin 2013, a wine perfectly introducing the character of Monforte d'Alba and expressing the magnificence of the prestigious red grape of Langa. Aged for six months in cask, this Nebbiolo is a wine of impeccable elegance, perfect representative of the wine making style and philosophy characterizing every wine of Manzone winery. The last two wines of the evening have been the prestigious and magnificent Barolo Gramolere 2011 and Barolo Riserva Gramolere 2007 - the latter awarded with DiWineTaste diamonds - powerful and elegant, having remarkable class and structure, confirm the huge potentials of the famous cru Gramolere, one of the most important areas of Monforte d'Alba. Two Barolos of extraordinary greatness, express remarkable personality while keeping intact the expression of Nebbiolo, thanks to the elegant productive style of Manzone and the intelligent use of cask, giving the senses a long and complex sequence of aromas of remarkable cleanness and full body, capable of keeping an incredible elegance. The tasting of Manzone's wines has been conducted by Antonello Biancalana.
